Let’s be real about this.

One of the things I know my clients get tired of hearing is this: Be real. I’m always reminding fundraisers (professional and volunteer) that they can be incredibly confident, smooth and polished, but if they’re not real and authentic in their passion for the cause, they’ll fall flat. I was reminded of this by Amanda Palmer’s TED Talk video that was posted last month. At the beginning, I was wondering where she was going with her talk, but she ends up showing wonderful vulnerability and realness.

You can’t make people give, as Amanda says. And yes, you have to know your craft, build a great network, manage your time well, spend time on important things that can significantly advance your mission, and so on. But if you lack realness, your donors will notice.
